3. How We Use Personal Information

We may use personal information for the following business and operational purposes:

  • Operate, maintain, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the Site and our digital services.

  • Provide and personalize editorial content, features, newsletters, and other communications you request.

  • Send promotional or informational communications where permitted by law and in accordance with your preferences.

  • Create aggregated or de-identified information that does not reasonably identify you, and use that information for lawful business, editorial, research, or analytical purposes.

4. Cookies and Similar Technologies

The Site is hosted on the Wix platform. Wix and other service providers may place cookies or use similar technologies to support security, Site functionality, fraud prevention, performance, analytics, and other features. Some cookies are necessary for the Site to function; others may be optional depending on the tools and integrations we enable.

Where required, we provide a cookie or privacy-choice banner that allows you to accept, reject, or manage non-essential cookies. You can also control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking certain cookies may affect Site functionality.

Third-party integrations, embedded content, social-media features, analytics services, or advertising tools may use their own cookies or technologies and are governed by their own privacy policies. We recommend reviewing the privacy settings and policies of those providers.

5. How We Disclose Personal Information

We may disclose personal information to the following categories of recipients when reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy:

  • Website and infrastructure providers, including Wix and providers that support hosting, content delivery, forms, databases, security, and technical operations.

  • Email, newsletter, communications, analytics, audience-measurement, and technology providers that process information on our behalf.

  • Professional advisers and business service providers, such as attorneys, accountants, insurers, consultants, and vendors, where appropriate.

  • Contributors, photographers, agencies, brands, public-relations representatives, event organizers, or other business contacts when necessary to carry out a request, collaboration, editorial project, or business relationship.

  • Government authorities, courts, regulators, law enforcement, or other parties when we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law, legal process, or necessary to protect rights, safety, or security.

  • A buyer, successor, investor, lender, or other relevant party in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, sale of assets, or similar business transaction, subject to appropriate confidentiality protections where applicable.

We do not sell personal information for monetary consideration. If we use technology in the future that constitutes a “sale,” “sharing,” or processing for targeted advertising under an applicable privacy law, we will provide any legally required notice and opt-out mechanism before or when such processing applies.

6. Advertising, Affiliate Links, and Embedded Content

The Scope may include advertising, sponsored content, affiliate links, product links, embedded social-media posts, videos, or other third-party content. When you interact with a third-party link, embed, advertisement, or platform, that third party may collect information directly from you according to its own privacy policy. The Scope does not control the privacy practices of unaffiliated third parties.

Affiliate or sponsored relationships, where applicable, are addressed through our separate disclosure practices. The presence of a link or embed does not change how this Privacy Policy applies to information collected directly by The Scope.

7. Email and Newsletter Communications

If you subscribe to a newsletter or other marketing communication, we may use your email address and related engagement information to send and improve those communications. You may unsubscribe from promotional emails at any time by using the unsubscribe link in the message or by contacting us. We may still send non-promotional messages when necessary for a transaction, request, legal matter, security issue, or other service-related purpose.

8. Editorial Submissions and Public Content

If you submit a comment, quote, biography, photograph, article, pitch, testimonial, social-media handle, or other material for publication or public display, information you intend for publication may be made public and may be indexed, copied, or shared by others. Do not submit confidential, private, or sensitive information for publication unless we have expressly agreed in writing to receive it on a confidential basis. Editorial submission and publication rights may also be governed by a separate contributor, license, release, or other agreement.

9. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, including to provide requested services, maintain appropriate business and editorial records, comply with law, resolve disputes, protect our rights, and enforce agreements. Retention periods vary based on the type of information, the nature of our relationship, legal requirements, and legitimate operational needs. We may retain aggregated or de-identified information for longer periods where it no longer reasonably identifies an individual.

10. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. We also rely on service providers, including our website platform, to maintain security measures appropriate to their services. No website, transmission, or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security of information.

11. Your Privacy Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live and the laws that apply to us, you may have rights regarding your personal information. These rights may include the ability to:

  • Confirm whether we process your personal information and request access to it.

  • Request correction of inaccurate personal information.

  • Request deletion of personal information, subject to legal exceptions.

  • Request a portable copy of certain personal information you provided to us.

  • Opt out of certain processing for targeted advertising, sale or sharing of personal information, or certain profiling where applicable.

  • Limit certain uses or disclosures of sensitive personal information where applicable.

  • Withdraw consent where our processing relies on consent, subject to applicable law.

  • Appeal a decision we make regarding a privacy-rights request where applicable.

  • Exercise applicable privacy rights without unlawful discrimination.

To submit a privacy request, contact us at sara.azmi@readthescope.com. Before responding, we may need to verify your identity and, where applicable, the authority of an agent acting on your behalf. We will respond within the time required by applicable law. If we deny a request that carries an appeal right, you may appeal by replying to our decision or contacting the same email address with “Privacy Appeal” in the subject line.

12. State-Specific Privacy Disclosures

Virginia and other U.S. state privacy laws may provide eligible residents with rights such as access, correction, deletion, portability, and the right to opt out of targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, or certain profiling. We honor rights required by applicable law when those laws apply to our processing. We do not use reader personal information for profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects about an individual.

California residents may also have rights under applicable California privacy laws, including rights to know, access, correct, delete, and, when applicable, opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and limit certain uses of sensitive personal information. The Scope does not sell personal information for money. If our practices change in a way that triggers additional California notices or opt-out requirements, we will update this Policy and provide the required controls.

Browser “Do Not Track” signals are not subject to a uniform industry standard, and the Site does not currently respond to them as a standalone signal. Where applicable law requires recognition of a legally valid universal opt-out mechanism, we will implement and honor such mechanisms as required.

13. Sensitive Personal Information

We do not intend for general Site forms, newsletter signups, or ordinary reader communications to collect highly sensitive personal information such as Social Security numbers, government identification numbers, account passwords, full payment-card information, biometric identifiers, precise geolocation, or medical records. Please do not submit this information unless a specific feature expressly requests it and provides appropriate notice. If we intentionally request or process information treated as sensitive under applicable law, we will obtain consent or provide other protections when required.

14. Children's Privacy

The Scope is a general-audience publication and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13 without the consent or other authorization required by law. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, contact us at sara.azmi@readthescope.com so that we can review and, where appropriate, delete the information.

15. Third-Party Websites and Services

The Site may link to or embed content from third-party websites, retailers, social-media platforms, video services, event platforms, brand websites, or other services. We are not responsible for the privacy, security, or data practices of those third parties. Your interactions with them are governed by their own terms and privacy notices.

16. International Visitors

The Scope is operated from the United States. If you access the Site from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored in, or processed in the United States or other countries where we or our service providers operate. Privacy and data-protection laws in those locations may differ from the laws of your country. Where applicable law requires additional safeguards for international transfers, we will use appropriate mechanisms.

17. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, services, legal requirements, or business operations. When we make changes, we will revise the “Last Updated” date above. If required by law, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent for material changes. We encourage you to review this Policy periodically.
