Enter The Lab
Christopher Kepple
What: A new recording studio run by a couple of seasoned locals
Who: Ed Brionas formerly of Station 58, Flowers and Kain and Mah Rey
Andy Stackpole sound producer and expert studio technician from many local albums and big time national stuff.
Where: The Dewart Building on State Street in New London, Connecticut
How: They lugged two tons of sand up the elevator to make the floor for the control room to help sound-proof the space. They also used recycled wood and other materials to create a very comfortable and original interior design. They hope this design will be welcoming to the creative types. Reportedly they did some dumpster diving for supplies — but, the recording equipment is all the highest end stuff. It’s a nice combo of thrift and elegant state of the art. In addition, it’s the only Pro Tools hi-def studio in New London and its only $50 an hour with no set up or breakdown charge.
Since when: They have been open since the summer of ’08.
Local bands and artists recorded there so far include: Gone for Good, The Weird Beards, Jim Oblon, Dave Turano of Dub Squad, Mike Maurino and more.
National acts who have used the studio: Edie Brickel, Will Calhoun and Doug Winbisch from Living Color.
Have known each other since: 1991.
We asked them about their finest local music memories.
Ed: hanging out with Jim Rice from the Red Sox at a Burning Spear concert at the El n Gee.
Andy: seeing Maceo Parker at the El n Gee. He said it was like going to school and church at the same time in downtown New London.
What they can do:
Fill any of your audio needs, for video projects, sound design, music production or recording your garage band’s hot new album.
Additional perk: They have a really nice microphone collection
Average recording time:
People who know their music should expect to spend a half-hour to forty-five minutes per song.
Future Projects / Goals:
Hoping to get the Reducers to record a future album at the Lab. Ya!
The space:
Their location at the Dewart Building is a boon to them since it’s a nexus for local arts and creativity
